Ever hear of MonaVie? How about the acai berry? Think juices, pills, additives, health snacks.
It’s all over and is quite the rage among people looking to intake antioxidants and improve their health.
There is, however, one small problem. The berry which has become the rich person’s additive used to be the staple food of the poor in Brazil. I say “used to” because the price of the berry has jumped over sixty (that’s 6-0) times what it sold for a few years ago.
Where is the social responsibility in this? Where are the glamor girls and Hollywood beefcake types when you really need them to decry an injustice. Our society is taking the food of the poor to feed our whims.
And making quite a profit in the meantime. A bottle of MonaVie costs $45. One bottle.
When will we ever learn that the staples of what each group needs to survive and prosper can typically be grown or raised in the geographical region where we each live? When will we get it through our thick skulls that a fruit drink chasing down forty years of ingesting hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup and sugar by the bushel is about as effective in bringing about our health as ordering a diet Coke to drink with our ten Big Macs?
