“I’m only doing my job.”
That’s a common phrase that gets used by people who are asked to do the ugly, dirty or undesirable tasks in society.
Recently, several American citizens were arrested for exercising free speech, peaceably in Manchester, GA. Their crime? They didn’t have a “parade permit.” No problem. They weren’t IN a parade.
They were, however, protesting the homosexual lifestyle which was being touted in the parade. They were arrested for exercising their right to free speech.
I’m sure many or all of the officers who arrested these citizens would turn the phrase themselves: “I was only doing my job.”
Here’s something I want my officer friends to consider:
- The soldiers of Herod who slaughtered those two years old and under were “only doing their job.”
- The soldiers of the Babylonian army who ripped out the wombs of pregnant women were “only doing their job.”
- The terrorists who brought down the Trade Center on 9/11 were “only doing their job.”
- The Nazi Gestapo and the SS soldiers who brutally murdered millions of Jews were “only doing their job.”
- The Japanese and German scientists in WWII who performed brutal experiments on live subjects to study the effects of drugs, trauma and pain were “only doing their job.”
- The Muslim suicide bombers in Jerusalem were “only doing their job.”
How’s that going to work out for them on judgment day? Do you think God Almighty will give them a free pass and say, “Oh, well, that explains EVERYTHING.” Will they get a “Well done, good and faithful servant” from the One who has power to cast body AND soul into hell fire?
Just remember, whoever you are and whatever your level of authority, when YOU are asked to do what is WRONG as part of your job, you have a moral obligation before God first and foremost to DO what is RIGHT. There will be no finger pointing at your appointment with the Top. And there will be no excuses that stand before Him. You can be the person who says, “Guys, this is wrong. I will not be part of it. You can demote me or fire me, but you can’t make me do what I know is wrong to do.”
Hmm. I wonder how THAT kind of response will be received by God?
