You’ve got to love it when a confirmed alcoholic gives up the bottle and starts working to better his life. You have to hand it to him when he stays dry for over 11 months as he builds up a steady clientele in his shoe shine business. You have to appreciate it when he lives homeless while saving his money to actually rent an apartment — not move into government housing.
And then the government hears about his new life in the newspaper and crushes him. “Give us all the money you’ve saved!” they demand. “We won’t tell you how and where to get a permit, but you owe us almost $500 to get one.”
That’s ridiculous. Our government can bail out General Motors and tons of banks. But when an individual tries to improve his rotten lot in life, the government feels obligated to kick him back down in the hole. Why? So he will choose food stamps, panhandling and liquor?
